Rúben Amorim was sacked on January 5, the following day following a 1-1 draw with Leeds United, before the Portuguese publicly expressed his clear dissatisfaction with the way the club was conducting things.
United have been in inconsistent form this season and have been particularly short-handed over the past month due to injuries and the departure of star players to the Africa Cup of Nations. However, there could be one or two key players returning as Darren Fletcher prepares to take charge on an interim basis for the first time.
Here’s a look at their injury list, when they expect players to return, and their projected lineup for their next game.

mason mountain

Estimated return date: January 7 (vs. Burnley)
Mount was substituted at half-time of the Boxing Day win over Newcastle United. Amorim said the midfielder “felt something” and was taken off as a precaution, despite Mount wanting to continue playing. He missed Wolves’ draw with Leeds United but Amorim said there was a chance he could feature against Burnley.
Bruno Fernandez
-
Estimated return date: January 7 (vs. Burnley)
Fernandes looked to have injured his hamstring in the 2-1 defeat at Villa and was taken off at half-time. Ahead of the game against Newcastle, Amorim said the skipper’s injury did not appear to be serious but he expected him to be out longer than Coby Minor. Like Mount, he could also return to Burnley.

Kobe Minu

Estimated return date: January 11 (vs. Brighton)
Mainu suffered a calf injury before the defeat to Aston Villa on December 21. Amorim said he was unsure how serious the injury was, but days later he confirmed Mainu’s return should be earlier than initially feared. However, there is no clear indication of when he will fully recover.
Matthijs de Ligt
-
Estimated return date: January 7 (vs. Burnley)
Amorim said De Ligt had been experiencing back pain following the 2-1 win over Crystal Palace on November 30 and had been carefully managing the centre-back since then. After missing seven games, he was given the chance to play in Fletcher’s first game.
Harry Maguire
-
Estimated return date: early january
Maguire suffered a thigh injury against Tottenham in November which was not expected to keep him out for long, but he has missed all league games since then. Hopefully he’ll be back within the next two weeks.
