Bayern Munich are still in talks with Dayot Upamecano over a contract extension beyond 2026.
Borussia Dortmund’s Nico Schlotterback will reportedly be considered as one of the alternatives if they fail to reach an agreement with the Frenchman.

However, for Germany legend Lothar Matthaus, replacing Upamecano with Schloterback would weaken Bayern’s centre-backs.
“Upamecano continues to develop at Bayern, just like Schloterbeck did at Dortmund. Both are top centre-backs. My impression is that Upamecano is slightly faster and plays very consistently, while Schloterbeck has made some mistakes recently. If it comes down to one position, I would rather start Upamecano than Schloterbeck.” Matthaus wrote in a column for Sky Deutschland.
“Nico can certainly become a Bayern player but at the moment I think the duo of Upamecano and Jonathan Tah is very stable.”
He did notice one weakness in the current centre-back pairing:
“They were solid in the aerial battle, but Bayern conceded some goals at set pieces. Defending set pieces has been a small problem for the team in recent months,” Matthaus said.
