1. FC Magdeburg’s DFB-Pokal last 16 match against RB Leipzig tonight was overshadowed by the tragic news that a fan passed away during the match.

RB Leipzig and Magdeburg released a statement via social media detailing the incident:

“We were all looking forward to a fantastic cup night under the floodlights but unfortunately it has been overshadowed by sad news.

“We regret to inform you that a fan of Magdeburg 1 who required resuscitation before the match has passed away in hospital.

“We would like to express our sincere condolences to their family and friends and wish them strength during this difficult time.

“Out of respect for the families, we will reduce live coverage of the club channels to a minimum. At times like this, football takes a back seat.”

After the game, Leipzig Red Bull coach Werner also reflected on this heartbreaking incident and expressed condolences to the family of the deceased.

“Of course when someone undergoes resuscitation it completely fades into the background and the support is understandably different.

“Unfortunately we learned after the game that he did not make it. Very, very sad – our condolences to his family,” Werner added.
