Democrats were furious after the Virginia Supreme Court on Friday struck down a partisan redistricting map that was critical to their midterm election strategy, with at least one prominent leftist going so far as to call violent revolution “inevitable.”
The Virginia Supreme Court ruled 4-3 that a voter-approved map that would have given Democrats a 10-1 advantage in U.S. House races violated the state constitution because of procedural errors in its passage. Virginia voters will cast their ballots in the 2026 midterm elections using the same district maps from the 2022 and 2024 elections, with Democrats currently leading 6-5.
But Democratic lawmakers and commentators viewed the Supreme Court’s decision as an act against the will of the people. Hasan Piker, a popular left-wing anchor who has espoused anti-Semitic rhetoric and campaigned with congressional candidates, accused the Virginia Supreme Court of rejecting the results of the state’s redistricting referendum.
“Scotts gutted the Voting Rights Act, carved up Tennessee’s last Democratic districts, and destroyed the power of the state’s black voters. Those who made peaceful revolution impossible made violent revolution inevitable,” Peck wrote in “X.”

Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., said Democrats won the redrawn maps fairly and fairly by holding statewide elections.

“Unlike Republican-led states redrawing their maps through backroom deals, the Virginia Legislature left it to the people to decide for themselves in a free and fair election,” Kaine said in a statement. “If the Virginia Supreme Court had legitimate concerns about this referendum, the time to stop it would have been before three million Virginians cast their vote.
Trump urges Virginia voters to reject Democrats’ ‘blatant partisan power grab’
A sign urges early voters to vote yes or no on Virginia’s redistricting referendum on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, at the Ellen M. Bozeman Government Center in Arlington, Virginia. Early voting for Virginia’s redistricting referendum remains open across the state.
“But the courts allowed the process to move forward, and Virginians sent a message loud and clear: We’re seeing President Trump’s unbridled power grab in states across the country, and we won’t tolerate it,” Kaine continued.
Kaine also agreed with Pike that the ruling “eviscerated” the Voting Rights Act.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) said they are “exploring all options” to fight back against the Virginia high court’s ruling.

“The decision to overturn the entire election is unprecedented, undemocratic and will not be tolerated,” Jeffries said in a statement.
Jeffries continued: “Republicans who make America Great Again have used voter suppression as a tactic, and far-right extremists on the Supreme Court undermined the Voting Rights Act, opening the door to a Jim Crow-like attack on black representation in the American South.”
Meanwhile, Virginia House Speaker Don Scott took a more pragmatic approach, saying he respected the high court’s ruling.
“We respect the courts. But we will continue to fight for a democracy where voters — not politicians — have the final say. Because in Virginia, the power still belongs to the people.”

When Democrats said the Virginia Supreme Court ruling violated the Voting Rights Act, Republican National Committee Chairman Joe Gruters, who spearheaded the lawsuit challenging the map, said the Virginia ruling was not based on politics but on the “rule of law.”
“Democrats just learned that when you try to rig an election, you lose,” Chairman Gruters said. “The Republican National Committee went to court to challenge this blatant power grab, and Virginia Democrats spent more than $66 million to lock in control and silence voters. We took them to court, and we won.”
