Late Sunday-Monday nor’easter expected to bring heavy snow to Massachusetts

Massachusetts has issued blizzard and winter storm warnings ahead of Nor’easter, which is expected to bring heavy snow, strong winds and coastal flooding on Monday.

The nor’easter is expected to move in Sunday night before gradually weakening Monday night into Tuesday.

“This is going to be a high-impact storm,” Boston 25 meteorologist Vicki Graf said. “We’re not just talking about heavy wet snow; we’re also talking about some stronger winds and some coastal flooding issues.”

“This is going to be a classic nor’easter,” Boston 25 meteorologist Tucker Antico said of the storm. “So, we have heavy snow, we’re going to have coastal flooding, mainly on the South Shore and the Boston area. My biggest concern is the power outages here because we have such heavy wet snow and some really strong winds.”

“We’re expecting wind gusts anywhere from 30 to 60 miles an hour, so with the heavy snow, we’re expecting to see some outages, especially along the coast and in southeastern Massachusetts,” Graf said. “The thing to keep in mind on Monday is that the heaviest winds are going to be early in the day and will eventually die down late Monday.”

“The worst-case scenario is with us all day Monday,” Graf said. “It’s an all-day event. We’re expecting heavy snow initially and then light snow later on Monday.”

Rainfall amounts of 18-24 inches are expected south of Boston into Rhode Island, including parts of the South Shore, South Shore and Norfolk counties.

Up to a foot of snow is possible from much of Connecticut to Worcester County and to the New Hampshire border.

“The further north and west you go, those totals decrease a little bit,” Graf said.

“Just looking at the numbers, this is going to be a big storm,” Antico added.

“Heavy snow conditions are possible at times, which could make travel hazardous and potentially life-threatening,” the National Weather Service in Boston warned.

Coastal flood warnings are also in effect for Essex, Suffolk, Norfolk, Plymouth, Barnstable, Dukes and Nantucket counties from Sunday night into Tuesday morning.

The Boston 25 Weather team will continue to monitor the forecast and provide updates as it develops.
