Kucherov and Goncalves power Lightning to 5-4 shootout win over Canadiens.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Nikita Kucherov scored twice, Goncalves added two assists and scored the decisive goal in the shootout as the Tampa Bay Lightning defeated the Montreal Canadiens 5-4 on Sunday.

Oliver Bjorkstrand had two assists for Tampa Bay. Nick Paul and Pontus Holmberg also scored for the Lightning, who won their fourth straight game. Jonas Johansson stopped 32 shots and two attempts in the shootout.

Juraj Slavkovskiy scored twice, including the game-tying goal with 3.8 seconds left, and helped Montreal come within one point in the third period after trailing 3-0 and 4-1. Noah Dobson had a goal and an assist and Ivan Demidov also scored for the Canadiens. Jacob Fowler had 18 saves for Montreal, which was playing its first game since the Christmas break.

Kucherov scored two of Tampa Bay’s three goals in the second period.

At 2 minutes and 28 seconds of the second quarter, Goncalves assisted Kucherov to score. At 12 minutes and 11 seconds, Kucherov scored again. Gonsalves missed a two-on-one opportunity, but Brayden grabbed the rebound and quickly passed Kucherov over the baseline.

At 14 minutes and 49 seconds, Paul rewritten the score to 3-0.

At 1 minute and 06 seconds into the third quarter, Demidov received a pass from Slavkovsky and broke Johnson’s buzzer beater. But Holmberg responded 34 seconds later, blocking a pass from Bjorkstrand and scoring for the fourth straight game. Montreal then scored three goals in the final 10 minutes and 44 seconds of the third quarter.

Blue Jackets 4, Islanders 2

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Columbus scored two goals in just over a minute of the third period and rallied to beat New York for its second straight victory.

Kirill Marchenko scored his second goal of the night with 3:19 left, just over a minute after Ivan Provorov tied the game at 2-2. Cole Sillinger scored an empty-net goal and Denton Matechuk and Sean Monahan both had two assists. Jeter Greaves stopped 24 shots.

Max Shabanov and Bo Horvat scored for New York and David Rittich made 31 saves for the Islanders, who appeared to have a win but lost the first of a two-stop road trip to end 2025.

Red Wings 3, Maple Leafs 2, OT

DETROIT (AP) — Simon Edwinson scored with 3:14 left in overtime to lift Detroit past Toronto.

Edvinson skated to the crease and scored on a backhand shot to help the Red Wings maintain a two-point lead over Atlantic Division-leading Tampa Bay.

Moritz Seidel and Mason Appleton scored for Detroit. Cam Talbot made 25 saves.

Matthew Kniss and Nicholas Robertson scored for Toronto, and John Tavares also assisted on two goals. Tavares has 56 points in 43 career games against the Red Wings. Dennis Hilderby made 33 saves.

Penguins 7, Blackhawks 3

CHICAGO (AP) — Justin Brazeau had his first NHL hat trick, Bryan Rust scored twice and Pittsburgh beat slumping Chicago.

Anthony Mantha had a goal and an assist and Noel Acciari had a goal as the Penguins won their second in three games, but only their second in their last 11 games (2-5-4). Ryan Shea had three assists and Arturs Silovs made 21 saves.

Blackhawks captain Nick Foligno, who returned after missing 19 games with a hand injury, scored, and Wyatt Kaiser and Tyler Bertuzzi each had a goal. Last-place Chicago beat Dallas in a shootout to snap a six-game losing streak and lose for the ninth time in its last 11 games (2-9-0).

Blackhawks goaltender Spencer Knight stopped just three of his first seven shots before being replaced by Arvid Soderblom at 12:03 of the game. Knight came back in the third quarter and stopped two shots he faced in the picture.

Soderblom stopped 12 of 15 shots, including Sidney Crosby’s breakaway in the second period.

Midway through the first quarter, the Penguins led 4-0.

Siren 4, Flyer 1

SEATTLE (AP) — Philipp Grubauer stopped 31 shots, Eeli Tolvanen scored twice in the third period and Seattle beat Philadelphia.

Jordan Eberle and Chandler Stephenson also scored for the Kraken, who extended their winning streak to four games after losing 10 of 11 games. Tolvanen and Stephenson each sent an assist.

Carl Grundstrom scored for the Flyers. Philadelphia failed to capitalize on their three power play opportunities. Dan Vladar made 16 saves.

Grubauer was Joey Daccord’s backup as Seattle earned its second straight win. On December 22, he made a season-high 40 saves in the Kraken’s 3-1 victory over the Anaheim Ducks. He allowed Grundstrom to score the only goal with 1:57 left in the final quarter.

After going scoreless in the first round, the Kraken have gone 10 consecutive games without scoring in the opening period. Seattle ranks second in the NHL with 2.54 goals per game through 35 games.
