Kirill Marchenko scores twice as Blue Jackets rally past Islanders 4-2

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — The Columbus Blue Jackets scored two goals in just over a minute of the third period on Sunday to beat the New York Islanders 4-2 for their second consecutive victory.

Kirill Marchenko scored his second goal of the night with 3:19 left, just over a minute after Ivan Provorov tied the game at 2-2. Cole Silinger scored an empty-net goal and Denton Matechuk and Sean Monahan each had two assists. Jeter Greaves stopped 24 shots.

Max Shabanov and Bo Horvat scored for New York and David Rittich made 31 saves for the Islanders, who appeared to have a win but lost the first of a two-stop road trip to end 2025.

Marchenko opened the scoring on a breakaway goal at 8:09 of the first period, and Shabanov tied the Islanders when a puck deflected from his knee and slid past Greaves with 2:44 left.

The second period started in chaos as Matt Barzal reacted to a Mason Marchment tripping penalty kick by slashing Marchment’s right foot with both hands, resulting in a major penalty and a game misconduct ejection. Columbus then failed to score on the 3-on-4 power play after Adam Pelech took a tripping penalty on Miles Wood.

Horvat gave New York the lead with a wrist shot with 6:36 left in the second period, his first goal since missing five games with a lower-body injury.
