Kirby Smart says Georgia DB ‘trying to get healthy’ amid injury

Georgia Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart provided a quick injury update on defensive back Jonel Aguero, who has missed some time this season with a hand/wrist injury and has required a bandage on his hand for much of the year. Aguero typically starts in Georgia’s defense, but he did not start in the SEC Championship game against Alabama.

In Aguero’s place, Georgia gave freshman Rasean Dinkins his first start in the SEC Tournament. Despite only recording one tackle, Dinkins impressed.

“Yeah, Jonel (Aguero) is with us every day,” Georgia coach Kirby Smart said. “He’s trying to get healthy, get better, and get himself ready to play.”

Dinkins had a great performance against Alabama and we expect him to play a big role on defense in the College Football Playoff. According to Smart, Dinkins has been practicing at a high level.

“(Racine Dinkins) Dink got a lot of reps,” Smart added. “Jaden (Harris) got a lot of reps with him out. We’ve moved some guys around. But it’s always nice to get more reps. You know, Dink has been reps all year long.”

The extended break should give Aguero time to get healthier, while Georgia may also return safety Kyron Jones, who missed significant time with a foot injury. Georgia used the extra prep time to heal some injuries, but it’s also possible the Bulldogs picked up some injuries in practice, but we likely won’t know until the Bulldogs release their first injury report three days before their Sugar Bowl game against the Ole Miss Rebels.
