Kansas men’s basketball assistant coach Joe Dooley has been suspended for three weeks after being arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.
Kansas head coach Bill Self announced Dooley’s suspension in a statement on Sunday, Dec. 21.

“We are aware that assistant coach Joe Dooley has been arrested for driving under the influence,” Self said in a statement. “Joe showed poor judgment and will be suspended for three weeks immediately. Joe is remorseful, apologetic and accepts the consequences of his actions.”

According to the Topeka Capital Journal, a division of the USA TODAY Network, Dooley was arrested by the Lawrence Police Department at 11:15 pm (CT) on Saturday, December 20, according to online records from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.
He was subsequently charged with driving under the influence, failing to stop in an accident causing injury or damage over $1,000, and transporting an open container. He was released on bail on December 21.

This is Dooley’s 13th season as an assistant coach at Self at Kansas and his fourth season in his second tenure at Lawrence. After being fired at East Carolina, he was rehired on Self’s staff as the Jayhawks’ director of student-athlete development ahead of the 2022-2023 season. He was subsequently promoted to assistant coach, which is still his current title.
Kansas (9-3) will host Davidson on Monday, Dec. 22 at Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence, its final game before the Christmas break. Dooley’s suspension will run through Kansas’ Big 12 road game at West Virginia on Saturday, Jan. 10.
