Lulo is a familiar figure having played alongside the Portuguese manager at Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid and Manchester United.

This makes him one of the most reliable members of Mourinho’s coaching staff.

The long-standing relationship also means Lulo played a major role in many of Mourinho’s biggest successes. Additionally, he has established his reputation as a highly respected goalkeeping coach.

Before becoming a coach, Lulo enjoyed a long career as a goalkeeper, playing for Benfica, Porto, Vitoria Setubal, Vitoria Guimarães, Aves and Salgueiros.

Bonding depth

Mourinho’s warm message, meanwhile, suggested it was clearly motivated by deep affection rather than simple professional respect.

“Now I cry, but I laugh, laugh a lot, talk about you and remember every moment,” he wrote.

Mourinho later added: “In the Mourinho family you are loved and you will survive.”

The former Manchester United boss also recalled a small detail that seemed to perfectly encapsulate Lulo’s personality, writing: “I will continue to hear you say ‘brother, everything is going to be okay’ before every game.”

He ended the tributes with a final farewell, adding: “RIP little hands.”
