SAN DIEGO (AP) — Jordan Walker hit a double in the seventh inning and scored on Masyn Winn’s triple to score the tiebreaker as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the San Diego Padres 2-1 on Thursday night.
Alec Burleson homered in the Cardinals’ opener of seven games in California, and the Cardinals won eight of 10 games.

Matthew Libertore (2-1) allowed three hits and three runs in six innings and St. Louis struck out six. His bullpen gave up one hit while facing at least nine batters, and Riley O’Brien pitched the ninth for his 11th save in 13 chances.
Walker led off rookie Bradley Rodriguez (0-2) with a double in the seventh inning after starter Michael King pitched six one-hit innings for San Diego. Walker scored when Nick Castellanos tried and failed to catch Winn’s fly to right field.
Xander Bogaerts started the first inning for the Padres, who lost for the sixth time in their last eight home games to open a four-game series. San Diego dropped six of nine overall.
King struck out six and struck out six, but Burleson pulled a changeup to right in the fourth inning.

Manny Machado drew two walks and eventually scored on Bogaerts’ single in the first inning.
Padres catcher Rodolfo Durán went 0-for-3 in his major league debut after 12 seasons in the minor leagues.
Duran, 28, ripped a 380-foot drive in the sixth inning with an exit velocity of 107.9 mph, but Victor Scott II caught the ball deep in center field. Duran then knocked Scott out while trying to steal second in the eighth.

Griffin Canning (0-0, 1.80 ERA) had a solid five-inning debut in his second start for the Padres. The Cards’ opponent is Michael McGreevy (2-2, 2.52), who grew up an hour north of Petco Park in San Clemente, California.
