John Oliver addressed Paramount’s proposed acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery in Sunday’s episode of the HBO series, using his opening monologue to comment on the potential ownership change. “We might be getting a new business dad!” Oliver said at the start of the show (via Variety ). HBO, which airs his show, operates under the Warner Bros. Discovery Channel umbrella.
Under the terms announced, Paramount intends to acquire all outstanding WBD shares for $31 per share in cash. The deal is expected to close in the third quarter of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals and shareholder approval, the companies said.
Oliver made it clear he wasn’t enthusiastic about the development. “Yeah, it’s not good news. In fact, if I can quote anyone who’s ever accidentally sat on a Roku remote, I’m at Paramount right now…how the hell do I get out of here?” he said.
Oliver has previously publicly criticized the potential merger between Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery Channel. When early discussions of the 2025 deal surfaced, he said: “Please stay away from us. You are not my real business dad and you never will be!”
The proposed acquisition gained momentum after Netflix formally declined to increase its offer for Warner Bros. Discovery Channel. WBD determined that Paramount Skydance’s latest bid constituted a “superior proposal” to its previous deal with Netflix. Netflix co-CEOs Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters said in a statement that the deal was “no longer financially attractive.”
