Maxi Kleber’s playing time has been inconsistent this season. He has received a number of DNP-CDs (did not play in a game – coach’s decision), but he has also played in some games and received meaningful playing time.
He’s no longer the same player he was a few years ago, when he was considered a solid defender and a good three-point shooter. But there have been a few times this season where the 6-foot-10 big man has come in and taken control of the situation well.

In the Los Angeles Lakers’ 128-104 victory over the Sacramento Kings on Sunday, Kleber played 14 minutes and scored six points on all three shots while grabbing six rebounds and blocking one shot. He also did a few little things that don’t show up on the stat sheet but added up to a win.
After Sunday’s game, head coach JJ Redick praised Kleber.
“We have a lot of good guys on this team,” Redick said. “A lot. I love these guys. His teammates love him. He’s a great teammate. It’s easy to back his success because of when he started his NBA career and some of those injuries. He’s not the same guy he was in his prime in Dallas, when I thought he was one of the most impactful all-around defenders in the NBA. But he just wins, [is] Very selfless and selfless. “
Redick was teammates with Kleber on the Dallas Mavericks during the 2020-21 season, so he knows firsthand the impact Kleber can have on the court. He pointed out how the veteran sets effective screens, which always helps teammates get good shots. Kleber also rolled and cut to the rim well Sunday, which led to two rim-shaking dunks.
As Deandre Ayton continues to be inconsistent, especially on offense, Kleber could play a role in the Lakers’ success this season and in the playoffs.
