Stevenson, 77, was taken into custody by New Castle County police on Monday following a week-long investigation into his wife’s death. The case was presented to a grand jury, which returned a murder indictment, according to a statement from the police department.
The former first lady’s ex-husband was charged with first-degree murder and sent to Howard Young Correctional Facility in lieu of $500,000 cash bail, police said.
According to local reports, police were called to Stevenson’s home just after 11 p.m. on December 28 to investigate a possible domestic dispute.
Inside, they found Linda Stevenson unresponsive. Despite efforts to resuscitate her, she was pronounced dead.
Linda Stevenson was married to Bill Stevenson for nearly 40 years, and Bill Stevenson’s marriage to Jill Jacobs divorced in 1975.
Jacobs married then-Sen. Joe Biden 1977.
Bill Stevenson opened The Stone Balloon, a popular University of Delaware bar in 1972. It was later named “One of the Top 100 College Bars in America” playboy magazine, according to its website.
