United States Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanne Pirro She was in damage control mode Tuesday morning after her comments sparked outrage from Second Amendment advocates and she threatened to “jail” anyone who brought a gun into Washington, D.C.
In an interview with a former Fox News colleague on Monday Martha McCallum Regarding the recent drop in crime in Washington, D.C., Pirro touted her office’s “removal of firearms from the streets” so that “those firearms cannot be used to commit murder, assault with a deadly weapon, or any type of carjacking or any type of robbery.”
“You bring a gun into this area, mark my words, you’re going to jail,” Pirro added. “I don’t care if you have a license in another area, I don’t care if you’re a law-abiding gun owner in another area, you bring a gun into this area and expect to go to jail and hope you get your gun back — that makes all the difference.”
Her comments drew swift and fierce condemnation from the right, with numerous gun rights advocates and organizations lambasting her for what they called an “idiot” and a betrayal of the president. donald trump Claims to support the Second Amendment.
On Tuesday morning, Pirro attempted to quell the outrage with a post on X (formerly Twitter).
“Let me be clear: I am a proud supporter of the Second Amendment,” she wrote. “Washington, D.C., law requires that handguns must be licensed by the Metropolitan Police Department in the District before being brought into our communities. We are focused on individuals who are illegally carrying firearms and will continue this momentum to keep our communities safe.”
Her post was met with quite a hostile reaction. Most of the replies and quote tweets came from conservatives expressing deep skepticism or liberals mocking her and Trump’s MAGA supporters.
A few hours later, Pirro tried again to shoot a video titled “[a] A message to my fellow gun owners…keep you safe again. “
“Good morning everyone, I’m in the office and some people are concerned about something I said yesterday, so I want to make it clear,” Pirro said in the one-minute video clip.
She continued:
I am a proud supporter of the Second Amendment. I own guns myself: long guns, pistols, and I’m a proud heel gun owner. In fact, I even gave the keynote address at the NRA convention.
However, you need to be responsible and every responsible gun owner I know makes sure they know the laws of where they are going and are aware of any registration requirements that may be in place.
President Trump’s goal, and my goal, is to make sure we take guns out of the hands of criminals. We have the lowest homicide rate on record, and there’s a reason for that. We are removing guns from our streets — illegal guns in the hands of criminals who want to use them to harm law-abiding citizens.
There’s a big difference here: you’re responsible, you obey the law, and you won’t have any problems with me.
