Vice President J.D. Vance on Monday asked the media not to share photos of his home after an alleged attacker broke some windows at his Cincinnati home, saying he wanted to shield his children from “the realities of a life of public service.”
Vance confirmed he was not home during the nighttime attack. Police arrested 26-year-old William DeFoor in connection with the incident on Monday, WLWT reported. The Secret Service told TheWrap that someone allegedly “caused property damage, including breaking windows on the exterior of a private residence associated with the vice president.”
A spokesman said the attack occurred shortly after midnight. The agency is currently coordinating with Cincinnati police and the local U.S. Attorney’s Office.
“I appreciate everyone’s well wishes regarding the attack on our family,” Vance wrote in an X post on Monday. “It is my understanding that a madman was trying to break in by hammering on the windows. I appreciate the quick response of the Secret Service and Cincinnati Police.”
Some local media published photos of the home with holes in its windows, and Vance asked reporters not to do so while the investigation continues.
“A request to the media: We try to protect our children from the realities of public service,” he said. “From that perspective, I’m skeptical about the news value of having pictures of houses with holes in their windows.”
The incident is the latest in a series of alleged acts of political violence, including an assassination attempt on President Donald Trump during his 2024 campaign, an arson at the home of Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro last year, the killing of a state lawmaker in Minnesota and the assassination of conservative influencer Charlie Kirk.
