BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Jarmo Kekalainen made his first changes since taking over the Buffalo Sabers hockey operations, firing associate general manager Jason Karmanos on Saturday.
Karmanos is in his fifth season with the organization and one of his primary responsibilities is managing the Rochester Americans of the AHL, the top minor league affiliate. Jason is the son of Hartford Whalers/Carolina Hurricanes owner Peter Karmanos, who joined the organization in 1998 and won two Stanley Cups while in Pittsburgh.

“We appreciate Jason’s contributions to the Buffalo Sabers and Rochester Americans and wish him the best in his future endeavors,” Kekalainen said in a statement.
Owner Terry Pegula promoted Kekalainen to general manager after firing Kevyn Adams on Monday. The 59-year-old Finn held the position for just over a decade with the Columbus Blue Jackets from 2013-24.
Since their last postseason appearance in 2011, the Sabers have endured the NHL’s longest playoff drought at 14 consecutive seasons. They are in last place in the Atlantic Division and on track to make the playoffs for the 15th consecutive year.
