Gary Lineker was as surprised as Manchester United supporters when he learned of Paul Scholes’ bizarre dig at Michael Carrick.
When Carrick suffered his first defeat as Red Devils manager away to Newcastle United last week, Scholes took to Instagram to react, writing: “There must be something special about Michael… because United have been terrible [the] Final four games…at night! “

Why Scholes’ comments are baseless
He later deleted the post, presumably because of the widespread backlash he received from fans.
Even if he feels the team’s performance levels have slipped in recent weeks, having one of his own former players, especially one as highly regarded as Scholes, make such a critical verdict doesn’t do anyone any favours.
Not to mention he appeared to be taking a direct attack on his former team-mate Carrick, who has done a job of keeping his cool since taking over after Ruben Amorim was abruptly sacked in January.
Being able to oversee seven games in a row without losing is a remarkable feat in itself, but the fact that he has put the team in such good standing in the Champions League means he is doing exactly what Ineos asked for when they appointed him.

Lineker on Scholes’ dig at Carrick
When analyzing the game between Manchester United and the Magpies on the “The Rest Is Football” program in the following days, Lineker talked about the situation: “He (Scholes) is poaching him (Carrick), isn’t he? He’s not too supportive of his old team-mate, is he?
“You see, there was a bit of a feud between Paul Scholes and Michael Carrick? It was strange.
“It’s weird, isn’t it? Maybe there’s some history in it. Who knows?”
Nonetheless, if indeed there ‘beef’ As Lineker said, this appears to be one-sided as Carrick has performed brilliantly and displayed the utmost professionalism in one of the most high-profile job roles in world football.
