New Delhi: In a thrilling IPL 2026 match at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday, Gujarat Titans kept their composure in a nail-biting encounter to beat Kings XI Punjab by 4 wickets, chasing down 164 runs with just one ball remaining.
With 11 runs needed in the final over, Washington Sundar kept his cool and sealed the match in style, scooping Marcus Stoinis for a six over backward leg. Sundar remained unbeaten on 40 off 23 balls to lead Gujarat to victory in a pressure chase.
The win sparked wild celebrations in the Gujarat Titans dugout. Cameras also captured head coach Ashish Nehra’s wife Rushma joining in the jubilant scenes.
Earlier, Kings XI Punjab recovered well after losing two wickets in the first three balls to score 163/9. Gujarat Titans completed the chase with one goal in a tight match.
Despite the defeat, Kings XI Punjab are still in a strong position at the top of the points table, even after consecutive losses to Rajasthan Royals and Gujarat. They remain one point ahead of Royal Challengers Bangalore, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Rajasthan Royals and Gujarat Titans. Punjab have played 9 games, won 6, and have 13 points with a net rating of +0.855.
“I think in a chase like this, we don’t want to take the game that deep, but there are two key points. It’s not the kind of wicket we were chasing in the 15-16 overs. So we thought maybe it was the previous over or the previous few overs. That’s the talk,” GT captain Shubman Gill said after the match.
“If someone is ready, they should go deep because it’s not easy to bat from No. 1. Long balls don’t come like they do on other wickets. It’s important for batsmen to be ready. Fortunately, we had Vashi, who finished the game for us. Just sent out the batsmen we thought were the best in the situation (regarding sending out left-hand batsmen one after another),” he added.
Gujarat Titans will take on Rajasthan Royals on May 9.
