Indiana jumps to No. 1 in AP Top 25 ahead of Georgia, Ohio State in final rankings before playoff

Indiana is the No. 1 team in the AP Top 25 college football rankings for the first time after finishing the regular season and Big Ten championship game 13-0, ending Ohio State’s 14-week run at the No. 1 spot.

The Indianapolis Hoosiers are on track to compete as the top seed in the 12-team College Football Playoff for the second consecutive time after a 13-10 win over the Buckeyes on Saturday night made them the unanimous No. 1 pick.

Georgia beat Alabama by three touchdowns in the Southeastern Conference championship game to move up one spot to second place, its highest ranking of the season. Defending national champion Ohio State dropped two spots to third.

Texas Tech also posted its highest ranking of the season after moving up one level to fourth with a 27-point victory over BYU in the Big 12 Championship.

Oregon State is ranked No. 5, followed by Mississippi State, Texas A&M, Oklahoma State, Notre Dame and Miami.

Miami moved up two spots to return to the top 10 for the first time since mid-October. Alabama and BYU dropped one spot to Nos. 11 and 12, respectively.

In the five-man bracket, Conference USA champion Tulane jumped four spots to No. 17, its highest ranking in two years. Sun Belt Conference champion James Madison remains ranked 19th.

The final AP Top 25 will be announced on Jan. 20, the day after the national championship game.

— Indiana University had the most losses in major college football history before Curt Sinetti arrived two years ago but had never been ranked higher than No. 2 before Sunday. The Indians held that spot for seven straight weeks before climbing to the top spot. They lead Georgia by 100 votes. The Bulldogs lead Ohio State by just 12 points.

— Due to the limited tournament schedule, all teams ranked in the top 25 remain in the voting.

— Virginia had its biggest drop, falling from No. 16 to No. 20 after losing to Duke in overtime in the ACC championship game.
