For a while, it looked like the Notre Dame football team’s battle with the state’s top recruits was coming to an end, but Wednesday afternoon, a dose of recent reality hit.
The state’s top player, wide receiver Monshun Sales, released his top 4 schools, and the Irish weren’t among them. The 6-foot-5, 195-pound star also has a chance to be the No. 9 player in the 247Sports Composite rankings in the class of 2027, along with Ohio State, Indiana State, Alabama and Miami.

This hurts because Notre Dame will once again miss out on one of the best prospects in the state. However, the class of 2026 signees does not include any of the top 10 players in the state, and the Irish’s top player signed last year was linebacker Drayk Bowen in 2023.
That worked out well for Notre Dame, so while it’s not ideal to see the state’s top player not end up in South Bend, it probably doesn’t matter that much. The Irish have still signed one of the best teams of the last few seasons and look primed to compete for titles for the foreseeable future.
