CNN Abby Phillip capture Scott Jennings Friday was a bit caught off guard cnn newsnightafter Republican strategists defended the president donald trump Renamed itself the Kennedy Center.
Last week, Trump announced that he would chair the Kennedy Center’s board of directors, which has loyal fans including the attorney general. Pam Bundyhis chief of staff Suzy Wellsand Fox News host Laura Ingrahamvoted to rename the cultural venue the Donald J. Trump and John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts, or, for the sake of brevity, the Trump-Kennedy Center. The day after the announcement, Trump’s name was engraved on the building.
Philip: What’s going to happen when the next Democratic president decides, you know, “We’re going to name it the Obama-Lincoln Memorial? We’re going to slap Bill Clinton’s name on something, anything.” Are you okay with that?
JENNINGS: So you’re saying Democrats are going to put Obama’s name on a statue that’s not his? It makes them look like the stupidest people ever.
Philip: Well, I’m glad you said that because the Kennedy Center is actually a memorial named for Congress.
JENNINGS: It’s not a statue.
Philip: It’s not a statue, but it’s a monument to President John F. Kennedy, just like the Lincoln Memorial is a monument to President Lincoln,” Philip replied.
JENNINGS: But it’s a statue. It has a similarity.
Philip: So are you ready to have a Democratic president blast their name?
Jennings: Yes, I am.
Philip: –anything.
Jennings: I’m ready for Democrats to incorrectly name every statue in America. I think, to prove your point, I think it would be great for their party. Change all names on statues.
Congress named the Kennedy Center the Kennedy Center in 1964, the year before Kennedy had been assassinated. “The living monument named in his honor by this joint resolution will be the only national monument in his honor in the city of Washington and its surrounding areas,” the congressional resolution said.
This month, Trump also announced a new battleship that will be named after him. The president said he would even be involved in their design because “I’m a very aesthetic person.”
