The author is When Night Falls: A Requiem for the Idaho Student Murders The 31-year-old has also been compared to the up-and-coming Dr. Hannibal Lecter – the fictional cannibal serial killer who has appeared in films such as silence of the lambsThe FBI sought his help in exposing other criminals and became known for his intelligence and demeanor. Koberg, Bloom said, “had a self-righteous personality. His ego transcended everything. He was training to be a professor, and there was an imperious detachment about him. He always felt like he was right. Murder is about control. And prison is the ultimate situation over which you have no control. He didn’t react well to that.”
Koberg’s dissatisfaction was reflected in his “relentless” written complaints to jail staff and retired homicide detectives Chris McDonald Tell the exit. McDonald said his grievances included the food, cell location and fellow inmates, which was an ill-advised move.
“Complaining about other prisoners is never the right attitude in prison. You just want to shut up and enjoy your time. He doesn’t talk to people: he talks to people from a condescension. That’s what he thinks he is. He’s condescending.”

All of this leads Bloom to predict that Koberg will eventually be inclined to engage with people outside prison walls.
“I think this is going to be the next shoe to drop. The question is, how long will it take for it to happen?” Bloom said. “I think he’s going to try to express his own perspective on things, and I think he wants to be seen as an authority. He sees himself as a professor in a lot of ways. He’s going to be his version of Hannibal Lecter, being both a serial killer and something beyond the serial killer, staying above the fray, commenting on it, and providing introspection and insight into the killer’s mind.”
