silent
Twitter recently introduced a mute feature in its app and web interface. This works well if you want to hide someone’s tweets without unfollowing them. We found this feature very useful when some people we followed posted multiple contest tweets. We muted them for a day, which hid all the annoying contest tweets from our feed.
Mute is not the same as blocking. Muted users can follow you and send you direct messages. They can reply to your tweets and mention you in their tweets. These will still show up in Twitter’s notifications tab. Another thing to remember is that tweets posted before you mute someone will appear on your timeline. Tweets posted after you mute him or her will not.
Here’s how to use this feature.
1. On the web, click More below any tweet from the person you want to mute. Now click Mute. Alternatively, you can go to their profile page and click the gear icon > Mute. Once you mute someone, the option to unmute will appear in the same place. Just open the profile, click the gear icon > Unmute.
2. On the Twitter Android and iOS apps, open anyone’s profile and tap the gear icon > Mute > Yes, I’m sure. The mute feature is not yet available in Twitter’s apps for other platforms.
3. To check if you’ve muted someone, simply go to their profile page. If you see a red mute icon next to the gear icon, you’ve muted it. A quick way to unmute is to just tap or click this icon.
Some third-party services also allow you to mute keywords or hashtags. This is useful if your timeline is being spammed by a Twitter contest, for example. Our favorite service is a paid app called Tweetbot (Rs. 300 on iPhone, Rs. 190 on iPad). How to use it:
1. Log in to Tweetbot for iPad > click the Silent Filter on the left side of the page > click Edit in the upper right corner. Click the “+” button > Click Mute Keywords. Then type “football” or whatever you want to mute.
2. On Tweetbot 3 for iPhone, log in and long press the profile picture next to any tweet. Click “Mute” to mute tweets from that profile. The silent filter icon is located on the bottom bar.
3. To mute a hashtag (for contests, etc.), you simply long-press on the hashtag on your timeline and tap on it for the duration you want to block it. You can also mute a user by long-pressing on their profile picture.
clogged
This is an extreme option and very useful if you encounter spammers or people harassing you on Twitter. Blocked users cannot follow you or add your account to their lists on Twitter. You won’t be able to see these people’s tweets, even if they mention your Twitter account. People you block will also not be able to see your profile photo.
If you’re sure you don’t want to interact with someone on Twitter, try this.
1. Go to the person’s Twitter profile, click the gear icon > Block or Report. The “Block” option is selected by default, and you can select “Submit a report” if you want to report the issue to Twitter. this Twitter mobile website You are not allowed to mute others, but you can report tweets and block others.
2. You can select a reason, such as “This is a spam account” or “This user is abusive.” If you select any option other than “This user is abusing,” you can click “Report” to let Twitter know about the issue. If you select “This user has been abusive,” Twitter will ask you to fill out a form describing the type of abuse you faced and provide some contact information. If you feel you are at risk, the page recommends contacting your local authorities.
3. To unblock a user, go to their profile, click the gear icon > Unblock.
