As of 8 p.m. Sunday, some towns in Rhode Island had reported up to a foot of snow.

Providence is experiencing the biggest snowstorm of the season so far, with up to 18 inches of snow expected. A winter storm warning is in effect until 8 p.m. Monday, and schools across the state have canceled classes.

“Travel will be difficult due to low visibility and snow-covered roads,” the National Weather Service warned. “Consider postponing all travel during the storm. If you must travel, have extra flashlights, food and water in your car for emergencies.”

Snowfall is expected to continue at a rate of about 2 inches per hour, possibly reaching 3 inches, before tapering off between 11 p.m. and 1 a.m.
