“God gave me good skills that allowed me to last all these years,” Seeley said.

We caught up with her at Memorial Park, where Seeley trains. The Houston mother of two told us she started running when she was 35. Her first race was the 1995 Houston Marathon.
“When I finished, I couldn’t walk for a week,” Seeley shared. “I picked it back up and thought… well, I can do it again next year and once I got into the habit of running, it became a lifestyle.”
Seeley has competed in every Houston Marathon since, except for 2021 due to the pandemic. She has also run marathons in all 50 states and on every continent, including Antarctica. She documented a running journey in her book, This Is The Race.
She gets mixed reactions when people find out how many marathons she has run. Seeley said some people didn’t believe her or thought she was crazy.

The question she’s most frequently asked is: “How many marathons do you run a year?” Seeley replies about 12 to 14 a year.
Another common question is “What’s your next goal?” Seeley’s answer: the next marathon. She runs one marathon at a time.
Over the years, marathons have become a family activity. Now, her husband has joined the running ranks, and her daughter has completed 12 marathons. Sunday will be her son Ryan’s first marathon.
“When I started running, I would run before the kids woke up. So, no one knew I was running until I ran a marathon. Now, they are my biggest support group.”

Seeley holds two world records. A Guinness World Record for the fastest overall marathon time by a woman in all 50 states of the United States. She also holds the record for the most sub-4-hour marathons by a woman, according to the World Records Institute.
“Running hits my endorphins and it makes me feel happy. I know it’s a cliche. It clears my head.”
