Here’s what’s open and closed on the holiday

Government offices, stock markets and schools were closed Monday for Presidents Day, but most major retailers were open.

If in doubt, call ahead or look online for a more specific schedule for a store near you.

Here’s a rundown of what’s open and closed on Presidents Day 2026:

government agencies

Federal and state government offices are closed. Courts and most schools are also closed.

The holiday’s official name is Washington’s Birthday for first President George Washington, although it has been informally known as Presidents’ Day. Arguments have also been made for honoring President Abraham Lincoln because of the close date of his birth, February 12.

Banks and stock markets

U.S. stocks and banks were closed on Monday but will reopen on Tuesday.

Retailer

Most large stores and other businesses are open.

national park

National parks are open to U.S. residents free of charge on Presidents Day. Late last year, the National Park Service announced that admission would no longer be free on Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Juneteenth, but would instead be free on June 14, Flag Day and President Donald Trump’s birthday. But other holidays remain free, including Presidents Day, Memorial Day and Independence Day weekends.
