Hegseth, chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff to brief ‘Gang of Eight’ US lawmakers, source says

WASHINGTON, Dec 8 (Reuters) – U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegers and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Dan Kaine are expected to brief the “Gang of Eight” lawmakers on Tuesday, according to a source familiar with the plan.

The “Gang of Eight” — the Intelligence Committee and bipartisan leaders in the House and Senate — traditionally receive briefings on major national security operations.

The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the plans are private, did not discuss the nature of the potential briefing.

A U.S. official who spoke on condition of anonymity confirmed that Hegseth would brief the group but did not comment on Kane’s involvement.

The disclosure of the briefing comes amid rising tensions between the United States and Venezuela, with President Donald Trump threatening a land crackdown on suspected Venezuelan drug traffickers after more than three months of military operations against suspected drug ships in the Caribbean and Pacific.

The U.S. military also conducted a large-scale build-up of warships in the Caribbean.
