KDOT crews were clearing the highway, but the department said the snow was falling so quickly that the road was being re-covered within minutes of plowing.

People are urged to stay off the roads as much as possible.

The Finney County Sheriff’s Office said on social media that the roads there were “terrible.” Some roads are even impassable due to slippery surfaces and heavy traffic.

The Garden City Police Department said first responders responded to multiple crashes, most of which occurred outside city limits.

While crews were clearing the city’s roads throughout the day, the department warned that many places could become slippery as temperatures drop overnight.

In Hodgman County, the Sheriff’s Office shared a photo on Facebook showing very low visibility.

“If you don’t have to go anywhere, stay home and stay safe!” the agency said.

KDOT is asking drivers to follow these tips when traveling in the winter:

  • Move over to give the plow room to work safely.

  • Allow more time to reach your destination.

  • Increase following distance.

  • Wear your seat belt and drive accordingly.
