A shooting at the Teotihuacan pyramids in Mexico left at least one person dead and many others injured, Mexico’s security cabinet said on Monday.
The cabinet said on Sunday that, according to preliminary information, a man opened fire at the famous archaeological site, killing a Canadian woman and then committing suicide.
Authorities said they seized a firearm, a bladed weapon and several bullets at the scene.
The state of Mexico said at least six people were injured, four from gunfire and two from falls, and were receiving medical treatment.
Mexico state Security Minister Cristóbal Castañeda said two Colombian nationals, a Canadian and a Russian were among the injured. He told reporters that the situation is now under control.
Canada’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs later confirmed that one Canadian citizen had been killed and another injured. In a statement, it expressed condolences to the families of the victims and thanked the Mexican government for its response.
CNN has contacted the Colombian and Russian embassies for comment.

The shooting comes as Mexico faces public safety scrutiny as it prepares to welcome this summer’s World Cup, which will host millions of visitors.
Videos on social media showed people fleeing the area after gunfire was heard around Teotihuacan’s Pyramid of the Moon.
Teotihuacan is a major archaeological site and tourist destination in the state of Mexico, located approximately 30 miles northeast of Mexico City. The vast archaeological area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is lined with several monuments, including two towering pyramids.
Mexican President Claudia Scheinbaum said federal, state and local agencies were responding to the shooting.
“We are deeply hurt by what happened in Teotihuacan today. I offer my sincerest solidarity to those affected and their families. We are in contact with the Canadian Embassy,” she said.
The Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it was still in contact with other embassies and was working to provide necessary support to the injured foreigners.
Mexico State Governor Delfina Gomez also expressed her support, “expressing solidarity with the families of those affected by the events in Teotihuacan.”
