GTA 6 to Eventually Launch on PC After Initial Release on Consoles, Take-Two CEO Suggests

Grand Theft Auto 6 is confirmed to launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S/X in the fall of 2025, but PC players may have to wait a little longer to play the game. Developer Rockstar Games typically releases its games on current-generation consoles first, then releases PC ports a few years later. While a PC release schedule for GTA 6 has yet to be determined, Rockstar parent company Take-Two Interactive said the highly anticipated game will eventually be released on the platform.

GTA 6 is finally coming to PC

In an interview with IGN published on Monday, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick mentioned Rockstar’s history of releasing games on other platforms after first releasing them on consoles.

“So Civ 7 is immediately available on console, PC and Switch. As with other games in our lineup, we don’t always have it across all platforms at the same time. Historically, Rockstar starts on certain platforms and then moves on to others,” Zelnick told IGN ahead of Take-Two’s recent Q3 2025 earnings call.

Zelnick talked about Civilization 7, the turn-based strategy game from Firaxis Games that launches on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X on February 11.

Rockstar’s PC Release History

Historically, Rockstar Games has waited several years before releasing its games on the PC platform. For example, Grand Theft Auto V launched on PS3 and Xbox 360 in September 2013, and then came to PS4 and Xbox One in November 2014. The PC version, on the other hand, received updates and new features nearly two years later in April 2015.

Rockstar’s latest game, Red Dead Redemption 2, is getting a faster PC release. The game was released on PS4 and Xbox One in October 2018; the PC version launched a year later in November 2019.

However, with the launch of GTA 6, Rockstar could launch a PC version sooner rather than later. For GTA 5, the release of the PC version was delayed to extend development time. But the studio launched the PC version of Grand Theft Auto 4 on PS3 and Xbox 360 in April 2008, just seven months ago.

Considering that GTA 6 will be released in late 2025, the PC version is expected to launch as early as 2026.

GTA 6 will drive PS5, Xbox Series S/X sales

During the interview, the Take-Two boss also emphasized the increasing importance of the PC platform for game distribution. After a period of PS5 exclusivity, Sony has pivoted to releasing first-party PlayStation games on PC. Some of the PlayStation parent company’s live service games, such as Helldivers 2, have been released simultaneously on PS5 and PC. Microsoft, on the other hand, launches all its first-party games simultaneously on Xbox and PC.

Zelnick admitted that not launching GTA 6 on PC would be a huge loss, as the PC version of the multi-platform game could generate 40% or more of total sales.

However, the executive said that the release of “GTA 6” will drive growth in console sales. The console-exclusive game is expected to boost declining sales of PS5 and Xbox Series S/X. Industry analysts believe that GTA 6 will become the biggest entertainment game of all time, with many people who don’t own current consoles scrambling to pick one up to play the game.

“When there’s a big game on the market and we launch a lot of those games, historically it’s sold consoles,” Zelnick said. He said that PS5 and Xbox Series S/X sales will see “meaningful growth” in 2025 due to the busy release schedule.

During Take-Two’s recent Q3 2025 earnings call, Zelnick reiterated GTA 6’s fall 2025 release schedule. In addition to Rockstar games, Take-Two plans to release Mafia: The Old Kingdom and Borderlands 4 this year.
