Grammy-nominated musician found dead in his Massachusetts home

An investigation is underway after a Grammy-nominated musician died suddenly at his home in Massachusetts on Monday, authorities said.

Chilmark Police Chief Sean Slavin confirmed in a statement to Boston 25 News that 50-year-old John Forté was found dead in his Chilmark home on Martha’s Vineyard around 2:30 p.m.

Slavin noted there were no signs of foul play or “an obvious cause of death.”

Forte, a native New Yorker, is known for his contributions to the Fugees’ Grammy-winning “The Score” and Wyclef Jean’s Grammy-nominated “The Carnival.”

The instrumentalist and rapper has also released solo albums such as “Poly Sci” and “I John,” with contributions from legendary recording artist Carly Simon.

According to MV Times, residents of Martha’s Vineyard became familiar with Forté through his many performances with Simon and her son, Ben Taylor, at island venues.

Folt fell in love with Martha’s Vineyard after visiting the island in 1998, moved to the island about a decade ago and built a recording studio in the basement of his Huinfield home, the newspaper reported.

He is survived by his wife, photographer Lara Fuller, and two children, ages 10 and 7.

The state medical examiner’s office in Sandwich is leading the investigation into Folt’s death.
