president Donald Trump’The White House on Wednesday unveiled a revamped food pyramid to coincide with the Department of Health and Human Services secretary Robert F.Kennedy Americans are urged to “eat real food.”
The revamped pyramid flips the old version on its head, starting with “protein, dairy and healthy fats” at the top, alongside vegetables and fruits. The base of the new pyramid is the “whole grain” section. The protein section showcases a large steak, a piece of salmon, a Thanksgiving-style turkey, and other items like eggs and whole milk.
Earlier Wednesday, Kennedy told reporters at a White House press briefing that the old pyramid, introduced in 1992, was scientifically bogus. He said it encourages Americans to eat twice as much bread as meat and dairy, thereby “thwarting” protein and healthy fat intake.
He said the old pyramid was a by-product of corporate influence on government guidelines.
“These guidelines replace corporate-driven assumptions with common-sense goals and gold-standard scientific integrity,” said Kennedy. “These new guidelines will revolutionize our nation’s food culture and make America healthy again. For decades, Americans have become increasingly sicker and health care costs have skyrocketed.”

“The reason is clear: The hard truth is that our government has been lying to us about the public health benefits of these food-like substances in order to protect corporate profits,” Kennedy continued.
The White House website dedicated to the new pyramid says the Trump administration is “ending the protein wars.”
The website says Americans “must prioritize high-quality, nutrient-dense protein” at every meal. It suggests a goal of 1.2-1.6 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day, which is about 2.2 pounds.
According to the website, 90% of U.S. medical spending is spent on treating chronic diseases, a large portion of which is related to poor diet.
