On Thursday, the Republican-aligned Heritage Foundation think tank released a threat from the president, sparking a wave of condemnation Donald Trump If Indiana doesn’t pass his gerrymandering, defund the state.
“President Trump has made it clear to Indiana leaders: If the Indiana Senate fails to pass the map, the state will be stripped of all federal funding,” Heritage Action wrote on X, adding:
Roads will not be paved. Guard bases will be closed. Major projects will be halted. These are the stakes, and every negative vote will be blamed.
Trump has been pressuring Indiana to redraw congressional maps to eliminate Democrats who hold seats in the state. The deep red state previously rejected the idea in the Senate but has since revived the effort amid threats from Trump. Trump had previously urged Texas to redraw its maps in favor of Republicans, which in turn led to moves in California to eliminate Republican seats.
“If Republicans don’t take the necessary steps to save our country, they will ultimately lose everything to the Democrats. Rod Bray and his friends won’t be in politics much longer, and I will do everything in my power to make sure they don’t hurt the Republican Party and our country again. One of my favorite states, Indiana, will be the only state in the union to reject the Republicans!” Trump wrote in a lengthy post on Wednesday.
