Good Sports: Tulare Union basketball coach breaks win record

When it comes to coaching men’s basketball, Coach Mark Hutton is always around.

“I couldn’t see myself doing anything else,” he said.

He spent 25 of his 34 seasons coaching the Tulare Union Tribe, so it’s easy to call this place home.

Especially when everyone at home is working too.

Mark’s wife, Diana, is the school’s athletic director. Their son, Wyatt, is in his final year playing basketball and golf under his father’s tutelage.

“This is my time with him,” Mark said. “I had him take a few lessons. During the day I would see him in the morning. We were either in the gym or on the golf course, and that was our relationship.”

As the son of a coach, expectations were high.

The Tribe is off to another great start to the season. Coach Hutton is leading the team to a 17-1 record heading into the league.

“When the game starts, he (Mark) is in this mode,” Brayden Stevenson said. “He’s strong for us.”

Last month’s win over his alma mater, Mount Whitney, made Coach Hutton the winningest head coach in Central District history.

That’s 579 wins and counting.

“I feel old,” Mark said. “This is a huge achievement for my family and all the players who have played before me.”

There are still many wins left for the coach.

“120 more,” one player said. “He’s not retiring for a long time. I don’t think he’s really working. I think he enjoys it so much that he doesn’t work a day in his life.”
