Georgia’s win over Tennessee in SEC play on Sunday ended abruptly with a hit to the wall, much to the chagrin of the Volunteers who were already celebrating.
In the top of the ninth inning, with two out and down, Tennessee pinch hitter Stone Lawless had a chance to salvage the game with a much-needed lead. He caught the ball: On the second pitch, Lawless took the ball and lofted it into deep right field and toward the fence for a two-run home run.

One problem: It’s not a home run. Georgia outfielder Cole Johnson was there to catch the ball as it headed toward the wall. The flyout was the Volunteers’ third and final out, and the Bulldogs ended the game on the spot.

The result was a bit embarrassing for Lawless, who had dropped his bat to the ground in victory and pointed to the dugout to celebrate his great achievement. Teammate Jay Abernathy, who was on deck at the time, could be seen jumping and shouting with joy.
Instead, the game just… ended. The Bulldogs won 8-7.
Georgia’s win capped off a three-game home series over the weekend against Tennessee. Although the Volunteers took the first game of the series, the Bulldogs won 4-2 on Saturday and won by one point on Sunday.
