Gasperini: I’ll pick Dybala ‘every time’ over Ferguson, I have January transfer hope

Roma boss Gian Piero Gasperini insists he would choose Paulo Dybala over Evan Ferguson “every time” and hopes the January transfer window will “help” Roma.

Roma lost 2-1 to Juventus on Saturday, leaving the Bianconeri just one point behind them in the Serie A standings.

Dybala started the attack for Roma, but Ferguson came on as a second-half substitute.

Gasperini told Sky Sport Italia in a post-match interview that the Republic of Ireland international’s claims were still unconvincing and he added more on the matter at a press conference attended by Football Italia.

“If I had to choose between Dybala and Ferguson, I would choose Dybala every time. It has nothing to do with Ferguson; it was a choice I made before and if it was the choice, I would choose Dybala.”

It’s no secret that Gasperini wants to bring in at least one new attacking player in the January transfer window, and after the defeat to Juventus he openly admitted that he wants the club to bring in reinforcements next month.

“I don’t know if it will come from the transfer market, but it’s certainly an opportunity,” he said.

“I’m very happy with the team’s performance and the spirit is commendable, but it’s no coincidence that we lost to Inter, Milan, Juventus and Napoli. It means we’re a step behind. We were close in some cases, but we have important fans and important clubs behind us. We have to aim to improve and I hope the January transfer window will help us do that. It won’t be easy, but we have to believe.”

Evan Ndika is on international duty and Mario Hermoso spent the entire game on the bench last night with muscle fatigue, so Jan Tsiolkovski starts at the back. Despite some “mistakes”, Gasp was pleased with the 20-year-old’s performance.

“It’s not surprising that we lost Endica and Hermoso, two of the three pillars of the defence. Tsiolkovski played a very good game,” Gasperini concluded.

“He is a player with great potential. It was not easy against Juventus’ attackers, but he performed well despite making some mistakes that anyone could make. He is a player with good prospects.”
