Local Australian media identified the man as 43-year-old fruit vendor Ahmed al Ahmed. He then took away the gun and pointed it at the gunman, who immediately backed away.
Local media outlet 7News reported that Ahmed suffered two gunshot wounds.
The outlet interviewed a man named Mustafa who claimed to be his cousin.
“He’s in the hospital and we don’t know what happened in there,” he said.
“We do wish him well. He is 100 percent a hero,” he said.

Shocking video of the encounter went viral, and Ahmed was praised online for his bravery and life-saving quick thinking, with many saying he may have saved several lives.
New South Wales Premier Chris Mining hailed Ahmed as a “real hero”.
“In the midst of all this evil, in the midst of all this sadness, there are still good, brave Australians who are prepared to risk their lives to help a complete stranger,” Mings told a news conference on Sunday evening.
President Trump said at an event at the White House on Sunday that the man’s actions “saved a lot of lives.”
“This was actually a very, very brave man who attacked one of the shooters head-on and saved a lot of lives,” Trump said, adding that the man “is in the hospital right now with pretty serious injuries.”
