A former U.S. attorney left the scene of a Houston crash, authorities said.

Jennifer Lowery, the former U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Texas, was charged with felony failure to prevent and render aid following the May 14 incident.

The driver of the Nissan Altima, identified in court documents as Gabriel Fonseca, told police he was driving east on Memorial Drive when his vehicle was struck on the driver’s side by a car parked in the median, Fox Houston reported.

Fonseca moved the car to safety, but the other driver drove away. He also complained of a “ringing” in his ears, court documents said.

“At the last second, I didn’t have time to turn, so I just put the horn down and [she] “It hit me right on the driver’s side. After that, I just heard a loud bang in my ears and dust everywhere,” Fonseca told Ktrk.

He said his car’s airbags deployed and he was confused when he tried to call for help after the impact.

“I remember pulling into the nearest parking lot. Somehow I called 911. I couldn’t open the door, so I crawled out,” he said.

Additionally, Fonseca told police it would cost about $35,000 to repair or replace his car and he wanted to press charges, according to court documents.

“She didn’t even check to see if I was dead,” Fonseca said. “Hitting someone and then running away with no concern is a selfish and cowardly act.”

At the scene, a witness walking his dog told police he saw a woman driving a heavily damaged vehicle and watched her park a few blocks away. He said he saw a “white blond female” in her 30s or 40s driving the sedan involved in the accident.

He said the vehicle had “significant front-end damage” and was “leaking fluids.” He also told them where the car was parked.

When officers went to the car park, they found a vehicle in the driveway of a home with “significant” front-end damage and a missing bumper. The license plate is said to be registered to Lowery.

As police were taking photos of the damaged vehicle, Lowery’s husband came out and introduced himself as a lawyer. He also confirmed that his wife had been involved in a car accident.

He told officials he would provide all necessary information but would not allow Lowery to provide a statement, authorities said.

Lowery has served in interim and acting roles since February 2021 and was appointed U.S. Attorney by a district judge in April 2022. She will lead the office until her successor takes over in December 2022.

“It’s very ironic,” Fonseca said. “She’s made a career out of holding people accountable.”
