WASHINGTON, March 19 (Reuters) – Former FBI Director James Comey has been subpoenaed by federal prosecutors in Miami as part of a U.S. Justice Department investigation into former officials who previously investigated and prosecuted President Donald Trump, CBS News and Axios reported on Thursday, citing sources.
Since its launch last year, the investigation has issued more than 130 subpoenas, targeting senior officials under former Presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden, Axios reported.
The Justice Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Representatives for Comey could not be reached. Comey’s attorney declined to comment to CBS News.
Reuters reported late last year that federal prosecutors were preparing grand jury subpoenas to investigate Obama-era intelligence officials who made assessments that Russia interfered in the 2016 presidential election that Trump won.
Comey oversaw the investigation into whether Russia and Trump’s 2016 campaign colluded with Russia. Trump’s firing of Comey prompted then-Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to appoint special counsel Robert Mueller.
Mueller’s investigation has dogged Trump for much of his first term. He ultimately concluded there was no evidence of a criminal conspiracy between the Trump campaign and Russia.
The Trump Justice Department also faces a number of legal and judicial hurdles as it investigates critics and opponents of the president’s second term.
In November, a judge dismissed the indictments against Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James, who had both previously led investigations into Trump.
