DeMarco Murray will return to the NFL after five years coaching the University of Oklahoma.
The Kansas City Chiefs are hiring Murray as their new running backs coach, NFL insider Jordan Schultz reports. CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz was the first to report Murray as an emerging candidate.
During his NFL career, Murray rushed for 7,174 yards, 4.5 yards per carry, and 49 touchdowns. His best season was in 2014 with Dallas, when he rushed for 1,845 yards and 13 scores and was named the Associated Press Offensive Player of the Year.

The Philadelphia Eagles signed Murray to a five-year, $42 million contract the following offseason, but the marriage only lasted one year. Chip Kelly failed to capitalize on Murray’s strengths, and a disastrous season led to Kelly’s firing. Murray was subsequently traded to Tennessee, where he re-emerged and retired at age 30.
Murray will join forces with returning offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy in an effort to improve Kansas City’s ground game.
