Fifty-five thousand Ukrainian soldiers killed on battlefield, Zelenskiy tells French TV

PARIS, Feb 4 (Reuters) – The number of Ukrainian soldiers killed on the battlefield as a result of the war with Russia is estimated at 55,000, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told France 2 television on Wednesday.

“In Ukraine, the official number of soldiers killed on the battlefield – both professionals and conscripts – is 55,000,” Zelensky said in a pre-recorded interview broadcast on Wednesday.

Zelensky, whose comments were translated into French, added that in addition to the casualty figures, a “large number of people” were believed to be missing.

Zelensky previously cited Ukraine’s war death toll in an interview with the American television network NBC in February 2025, saying that more than 46,000 Ukrainian soldiers died on the battlefield.
