Fatal crash keeping I-95 lanes closed on Florida interstate. What we know

The northbound lanes of Interstate 95 in Brevard County remained closed for nearly five hours following a fatal crash early Monday morning.

The crash occurred when the driver of a tractor-trailer crashed into the back of a “CMTI MOT truck,” according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Creative Management Technology Inc. is an FDOT contractor. The truck provides highway information and accident information via a large information screen.

All northbound motorists will be diverted off Interstate 95 via State Road 46.

All northbound lanes are closed in Mims in northern Brevard County following a fatal crash earlier this morning, according to the Florida Department of Traffic and Highway Patrol.

FHP said the crash happened around 9 a.m. near mile marker 228 in Mims.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a tractor-trailer traveling north on I-95 struck the back of a parked CMTI truck. The CMTI truck’s arrow plate and lights were activated due to a fire on the vehicle ahead.

The tractor-trailer “failed to slow down or move,” the FHP email said.

The accident caused both vehicles to crash into the guardrail on the shoulder of the road.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, a 63-year-old man from Orlando, was not injured and remained at the scene.

There were two people in the CMTI truck. A man in the driver’s seat was pronounced dead at the scene.

FHP said a 42-year-old man from St. Cloud was airlifted to Lake Monroe Hospital with serious injuries.

I-95 traffic diversions in Brevard County

As of 1:45 pm on Monday, December 22, all northbound lanes of I-95 remain closed.

According to an email from FDOT, “Motorists traveling northbound on I-95 will be rerouted at SR 46. From there, motorists should travel east on SR 46, turn left onto northbound US 1, then turn left onto westbound Deering Parkway before reaching the I-95 overpass.”

Fatal car crash during Christmas travel rush

The accident occurred during the peak Christmas travel period.

AAA estimates that 7.5 million Floridians will visit family, travel to a vacation spot or simply travel at least 50 miles from home between December 20 and January 1.
