Fans angry after cup game called off after kick-off time

Fans were left furious after Tuesday’s KDM Evolution Cup tie between Queen of the South and Dunfermline Athletic was postponed 10 minutes after it was scheduled to start.

It was one of six games in the Round of 32 that were canceled due to strong winds and rain from Storm Bram, which brought wind gusts of 90 miles per hour.

But the decision came particularly late at Dumfries-Palmerston Park, with Dunfermline posting on X at 19:26 GMT (20 minutes before kick-off): “Kick-off has been postponed due to traffic jams encountered by some Queen of the South players.”

Queens later said the referee was also held back.

Dunfermline released a message shortly after 19:00 that they had arrived at the stadium, saying: “Officers are checking on the situation in Dumfries.”

However, at 19:48 they added: “Due to safety concerns and high winds, race officials have called off the race.

“We apologize to our supporters who have made the long journey to Dumfries.”

Some fans responded saying it was a “shame” to postpone the event so late with strong winds forecast, leaving them with a 200-mile round trip in vain.

Partick Thistle also expressed their supporters’ frustration at the Glasgow side’s game against Bay Wanderers in Aberdeen being postponed to 18:30.

They said: “We share the frustration of the supporters who traveled to Bayside Wanderers.”

“The pitch at Balmoral Stadium was open for play. However, shortly after the teams arrived, match officials deemed the wind too strong and the match was called off.”
