Did USA Hockey captain Auston Matthews lose control and lash out at Canada in his post-game interview? No, that’s not true: Video of Matthews’ interview after the Feb. 22, 2026, Olympic gold medal game shows that he never faulted Canada for its prime minister wearing blackface and dating Katy Perry. Matthews also stopped short of calling Canadian rapper Drake a pedophile.
The statement appeared in a post on X.com account @RealRobReinhart on February 22, 2026 (archived here). It opens:
U.S. captain Auston Matthews had this to say to his team before halftime in overtime:
“They tell us we’re bad people because of our government or whatever… that’s not who we are at all. Their last prime minister wore blackface, divorced his wife and then started sleeping with Katy Perry… Katy Perry can no longer sell tickets to her shows. Their biggest star [Drake] is a certified pedophile. So you tell me who’s worse off. Let’s get out there and remind them who we really are. “

The NHL posted a 20-minute video on its YouTube page (archived here) titled “U.S. Men’s Hockey Gold Medal Press Conference,” which shows comments from players and coaches following the February 22, 2026 gold medal game. Matthews did not mention the quote in his tweet in the video.

If Matthews had made those comments, it would have become national and international news. Main Story A search of Google (archived here) and Yahoo! News (archived here) found no news reports reporting the inflammatory comments.
