Ex-Michigan coach Sherrone Moore charged with felony home invasion

Former Michigan State coach Sheron Moore was charged Friday with third-degree burglary, stalking and breaking and entering without breaking and entering after being taken into custody Wednesday.

Moore was taken into police custody in Saline, Michigan, hours after the Michigan school said it discovered evidence of an inappropriate relationship with a staff member, leading to Moore’s firing. Moore remains in police custody since police received a call about the alleged assault. Police said at the time that the incident was “not random in nature.”

The burglary charge is a felony.

On Thursday, Michigan State President Domenico Grasso said the school’s investigation into Moore was ongoing.

“When the results of the university’s investigation into Coach Moore’s conduct were announced Wednesday, we immediately terminated his employment,” Grasso wrote in a letter to the university.

“This behavior will never be tolerated at the University of Michigan. None.”

The Wall Street Journal reported Friday that the state of Michigan received a tip in October that Moore had had a relationship with a staff member, but during the state’s investigation, both Moore and the woman denied they had a relationship. However, the school hired an outside law firm to investigate further. On Wednesday, The Wall Street Journal reported that the woman told the company that her relationship with Moore had lasted for about two years, until 2024, and “there are emails, text messages and phone records to prove that.”

Moore served as Michigan’s offensive coordinator under former coach Jim Harbaugh and served as the team’s interim coach during two different periods during Harbaugh’s suspended 2023 season. Moore was then promoted to Harbaugh’s successor before the start of the 2024 season. In Moore’s two seasons, Michigan went 17-8.
