Next on Barcelona’s schedule may be Villarreal, but the focus has turned to a more emotional and sensitive occasion.
The first game of the new year is the Catalan derby, and all attention is inevitably focused on one figure – Joan Garcia.

The goalkeeper’s move from Espanyol to Barcelona last summer sparked a huge reaction from Espanyol fans.
It’s a far-reaching move and Garcia’s return to familiar territory is not expected to be quiet.
The venue itself also adds to the tension, with the derby taking place at the RCDE Stadium where emotions will naturally run high.
The Spaniards are already preparing
Espanyol have been working behind the scenes for some time to prepare for Garcia’s return, according to Radio Catalunya (h/t SPORT).
The club are fully aware of the possible reaction from the stands and are keen to ensure the situation does not get out of hand.

Their first priority is “Avoid unpleasant situations” Most importantly, prevent incidents that could lead to serious sanctions or even stadium closures.
One of the main concerns is the possibility of objects being thrown from the stands. Espanyol are determined to prevent this from happening at all costs.
Therefore, the security measures for the derby will be significantly strengthened than usual.
The club plans to reinforce areas of the stadium where incidents are most likely to occur. Both goals will be closely watched, including the one Garcia is expected to defend.
The aim is to stop any action in the stands before it starts. To achieve this, the security operation will involve increased deployment of police, private security personnel and near-hand-to-hand combat.
It is expected that artificial barriers will be in place behind the Canito Stand goals to reduce any risk.
