England airport incident with cameraman ‘not ideal’

Brendan McCullum says an incident between a security guard and a TV cameraman in England was “not ideal”.

Australia’s Channel 7 has blamed tourist backroom staff for a physical altercation following Saturday’s incident at Brisbane Airport.

The altercation was filmed as the England team prepared to board a flight to Adelaide and broadcast on Seven and social channels.

England head coach McCullum said: “Hopefully this matter has been resolved and everyone can move on.”

“I didn’t see it. I don’t know what level it was. We have a security team working to protect players. I don’t know where along the line it was.”

The Brisbane Airport back-and-forth took place at the end of England’s break in the Queensland beach town of Noosa and they were regularly captured on camera, including by Channel Seven.

The coverage follows a pattern closely followed by media outlets across England and Australia.

Cricket Australia has previously issued a reminder to all media that the team will not be able to grant interviews while in transit at the airport and all images should be taken from a respectful distance.

A statement issued by Seven Network on Saturday said: “While conducting a routine filming in a public place, despite the camera operator being respectful and professional, he was subjected to a physical confrontation.”

Speaking on Sunday, McCallum said: “You know when you come to Australia there will be a lot of looks. Everything you do will be scrutinized.

“I thought we managed it really well throughout the tour. I thought the lads did a really good job when we played in Noosa last week.

“They talked to a lot of locals and everyone was in good spirits. There was some good banter in both directions and I think everyone gave it the respect it deserved.”

Players being secretly photographed at airports is a common occurrence in Australia.

Last year, Indian star Virat Kohli expressed displeasure over a recording session at Melbourne Airport.

Australia all-rounder Cameron Green says he has “sympathy” for England’s current situation.

“You never like being filmed, especially when you’re trying to get away from it,” Green said.

“People always have sympathy for anyone in their life who is filmed in a public or private space. It’s never a nice feeling.

“That’s the expectation as a cricketer in Australia or England, you can be subject to quite a bit of media scrutiny.

“When you’re going well, you like the extra attention, and when you’re not going well, you don’t like it. Unfortunately, that’s just part of the job.”
