Elden Ring Nightreign’s Procedurally Generated Map Will See ‘Large-Scale Changes to Terrain’

Elden Ring Nightreign was announced at The Game Awards 2024 and is expected to launch in 2025. This independent multiplayer co-op action-survival game will drop players into the Limveld, where they will face challenges and bosses in a three-day and three-night cycle. Now, developer FromSoftware has shared some details about the game’s procedurally generated world, which will bring different obstacles in each run. Elden Ring Nightreign will see a complete overhaul of the map, with volcanoes, forests – and yes – swamps appearing in different levels.

“Elden Ring Nightreign” map changes

Game director Junya Ishizaki spoke to PC Game in issue 504 of the magazine (via GamesRadar) and further elaborated on FromSoftware’s approach to Elden Ring Nightreign’s procedurally generated environments. According to him, the game’s maps sometimes feature “large-scale terrain changes, in the form of procedurally generated volcanoes, swamps, or forests.”

“We wanted the map itself to be a giant dungeon so players would have the opportunity to traverse and explore it in a different way every time they play the game,” he said. “You have to choose the boss you want to face at the end of the third day.”

In Nightreign, players must survive alone or in squads of three over three day-night cycles, with the map shrinking in size each night, much like a battle royale game like Fortnite. At the end of each night, players take on powerful bosses, and then face off against the Night King boss of their choice on the third night.

“Once you make that choice, maybe you’ll know how to strategize against that boss, and that might change the way you approach the map,” Ishizaki said. “We want to give players the agency to decide ‘I need to find a poisonous weapon this time to face this boss.'”

The procedural nature of the map and environmental threats mean Nightreign will offer a different experience on each run, incorporating elements of roguelike gameplay. As Ishizaki revealed, dangerous swamps – an iconic feature in FromSoftware games – will also appear.

Elden Ring Nightreign will be released in 2025 on PC (Steam), PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series S/X.
