Elden Ring Has Sold 30 Million Copies in 3 Years, FromSoftware Announces

Developer FromSoftware announced on Monday that “Elden Ring,” a breakthrough action role-playing game due to be released in 2022, has sold 30 million copies. The game hit the sales milestone three years after its launch, showing that it’s still going strong. Elden Ring is easily the Japanese studio’s highest-selling game, and the studio is currently developing spin-off Elden Ring Nightreign.

“Elden Ring” sales exceed 30 million

FromSoftware confirmed in a post on Monday that Elden Ring has sold 30 million copies, thanking players who continue to explore Lands Between. “Dear Defiler, we are deeply grateful for your enduring devotion. May your path always be guided by golden grace,” the official Elden Ring account wrote in the post.

Since its launch in February 2022, “Elden Ring” has reached the 30 million copy sales mark in just over three years. The last 5 million copies sold were within the past 10 months, which shows that the action RPG is still going strong several years after its release. Elden Ring sold 25 million copies in June 2024, just days after the launch of its first and only major expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree.

The expansion pack added new story content, new map areas, new enemies, boss battles, etc. It received widespread praise upon its release and became the highest-rated expansion pack on Metacritic. Shadow of the Erdtree was also controversially nominated for the top Game of the Year award at the 2024 Game Awards, but ultimately lost to Astro Bot. Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree sold 5 million copies worldwide just three days after its release, and has likely sold even more since then.

The future of Elden Ring

Elden Ring is developer FromSoftware’s most profitable franchise to date, easily beating out Dark Souls 3 (released in 2016) and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice (2019), both of which have sold more than 10 million copies. In fact, “Elden Ring” has now surpassed the total sales of the entire “Dark Souls” series, with the three games in the series having sold more than 27 million copies.

However, FromSoftware has no plans to make a sequel to its biggest game, although it has multiple projects in development. FromSoftware president and Elden Ring director Hidetaka Miyazaki said in December 2024 that the studio was focusing on other projects. “We don’t have any concrete plans for Elden Ring 2,” he said at the PlayStation Partner Awards 2024 Japan Asia event at the time. However, the game director has left the door open in some form for future media productions within the Elden Ring IP. “I want to tell you that we do not rule out developing the IP “Elden Ring” in some form in the future,” Miyazaki said.

However, a few days later, FromSoftware announced the spin-off multiplayer cooperative action-survival game Elden Ring Nightreign at the 2025 Game Awards. The game is set to release on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X on May 30.
